Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printing method and Orthotics Prosthetics

Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) is a 3D printing technology that uses a bed of powder material, which is selectively fused by jets of heating elements to create a solid object.

PROCESS

The process of creating a custom orthotic or prosthetic with MJF typically involves the following steps:

  • Design: The first step is to create a digital model of the orthotic or prosthetic using computer-aided design (CAD) software. This model is typically created based on a scan or a mold of the patient’s limb or body part.
  • Slicing: Once the digital model is complete, it is sliced into thin layers. These layers will be used as the basis for the 3D printing process.
  • Powder bed preparation: The MJF printer will be filled with a bed of powder material, this is the material that will be used to create the final product, it can be different types of plastics or metals.
  • Printing: The printer will then begin to print the object, layer by layer. The heating element in the print head selectively melts the powder material where it is needed to create the object. The unmelted powder acts as support material and provides a consistent surface for the next layer to be printed on.
  • Support removal: Once the printing process is complete, the support material is removed from the object, leaving the finished orthotic or prosthetic.
  • Post-processing: The object may require further post-processing such as sanding, polishing, or painting to achieve the desired finish.
  • Final fitting: The final product will be fitted to the patient’s limb or body part, and any necessary adjustments will be made.

BENEFITS

The advantages of using MJF to create custom orthotics and prosthetics include the ability to create complex geometries, produce lightweight and durable parts, and the ability to create customized products for individual patients.

MJF Machines can print multiple parts simultaneously, which can increase the efficiency of the printing process.

MJF 3D printing machines can produce parts with a high degree of accuracy and repeatability, which makes it ideal for mass production of small to medium-sized parts.

MACHINES

There are several manufacturers that produce MJF 3D printing machines, including HP, EOS, and Stratasys. These machines can be used to print a variety of different materials, including plastics, metals, and even ceramics. They can produce high-quality, accurate parts with fine details and a smooth surface finish.

LIMITATIONS

One of the limitations of MJF 3D printing machines is that the printing process can be slow and the cost of the powders and the machine itself can be relatively high.
